The event commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. Vidya Sagar GV, Professor, Department of Biochemistry, who encouraged students to make the most of such academic opportunities to deepen their conceptual understanding.
Dr. Mythri. S, Assistant Professor, Department of Biochemistry gave a brief introduction about the guest speaker, Dr. Shilpashree YD, MBBS, MD, Professor, Department of Biochemistry, Farookh Academy of Medical Education, Hospital and Research Institute, Mysore. She presented an overview of the speaker’s academic journey, professional accomplishments, and contributions to the field of Biochemistry and medical education, setting the stage for the much-awaited lecture.
In a ceremonial moment the Vice-Principal Dr. Nanjaraju CP and Dr. Manjula KS felicitated the Guest Speaker as a token of gratitude and appreciation for her valuable contribution, The felicitation ceremony acknowledged her dedication to teaching and her efforts in simplifying complex biochemical concepts for undergraduate learners.
The highlight of the programme was the guest lecture titled: “The Dark Side of Heme Synthesis: Unmasking Porphyrias” delivered by Dr. Shilpashree.
Dr. Shilpashree presented a comprehensive and engaging lecture on the biochemical and clinical dimensions of Porphyrias, a group of metabolic disorders associated with defects in heme synthesis. She systematically covered: Overview of heme biosynthesis, Enzymatic defects leading to various porphyrias, Classification and pathophysiology, Clinical manifestations and red-flag symptoms and Diagnostic
biochemical investigations. She also covered on hem breakdown.
Her presentation was highly interactive and enriched with quizzes, diagnostic algorithms, and visual illustrations, enabling students to effectively correlate biochemical pathways with clinical scenarios. The guest lecture proved to be highly informative and academically stimulating, providing Phase I MBBS students with deeper insights into heme metabolism and porphyrias. The session strengthened their
foundation for university examinations and future clinical practice, while reinforcing the importance of Biochemistry in patient care. The The Department of Biochemistry is committed to driving innovative academic initiatives that spark curiosity, strengthen clinical insight, and nurture future-ready medical professionals.
