Acid Base Balance: Translating Theory into Practice

The Department of Biochemistry is pleased to announce a one-day workshop on “Acid- Base Balance: Translating Theory into Practice” for Phase 1 MBBS students of the 2024-25 batch. This workshop will be held on 21st February 2025, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, at Lecture Hall-1, SCMCH & RI.
Acid-base balance is a critical physiological process essential for maintaining homeostasis in the body. Understanding its mechanisms is fundamental for Phase 1 MBBS students, especially when dealing with a variety of clinical conditions resulting from imbalances.
This workshop is designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of acid-base balance, with a special focus on its clinical implications. The event will be led by Dr. Preethi B.P., Professor of Biochemistry at J.J.M. Medical College, Davangere, an esteemed expert in the field.
The day-long program will begin with a pre-test to assess students’ current knowledge. Following this, Dr. Preethi B.P. will guide students through interactive sessions covering core concepts like pH, buffers, and the roles of the respiratory and renal systems.
A key highlight of the workshop will be a detailed case discussion on acid-base disorders such as metabolic acidosis and respiratory alkalosis, where students will learn to interpret arterial blood gas (ABG) results and other laboratory data.
The workshop will conclude with a hands-on session focused on the practical interpretation of ABG reports. This session will bridge the gap between theory and practice, empowering students to apply their knowledge in real-world clinical settings.
We look forward to an engaging and enriching day that will enhance both diagnostic and clinical reasoning skills!
