Guest Lecture on Gut-Brain Axis at SCMCH&RI

The Department of Physiology successfully organized a guest lecture for the 1st year MBBS students on the highly relevant and intriguing topic, “Gut-Brain Axis”, on 13th February 2025.
The guest speaker for the session was Dr. Prashanth B Gandhi, a renowned Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist and Senior Consultant at Sparsh Hospital, Bengaluru. His expertise and insights added immense value to the event.
The program commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. Sowmiya, Associate Professor, Department of Physiology. As a mark of respect and environmental consciousness, Dr. Prashanth was presented with a Dracaena Trifasciata plant by Dr. Yogesh, Head of the Department of Physiology. The Principal and Vice Principal were welcomed with Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi), symbolizing auspicious beginnings.
Dr. Puneeth M, Professor, Department of Physiology, introduced the esteemed speaker to the audience. This was followed by a facilitation ceremony led by Dr. Pravin G.U, Principal, and Dr. Nanjaraj, Vice Principal, SCMCH&RI.
Dr. Prashanth B. Gandhi commenced the lecture with an engaging ice-breaking session, immediately capturing the students’ attention. He then delved into the complexities of the Gut-Brain Axis, explaining the physiological and clinical significance of the bidirectional communication between the gut and the brain. The session concluded with an interactive quiz, showcasing rare medical photographs and discussing upcoming technologies in Gastroenterology, which was both informative and thought-provoking for the students.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sudarshan, Professor, Department of Physiology. To recognize academic excellence, prizes were distributed to the toppers of the 1st Internal Assessment Exams by the guest speaker and the Vice Principal.
The lecture was not only a learning opportunity but also an inspiring session that highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary knowledge in medicine.
