Community Medicine Department


Community Medicine is a branch of Medicine which deals with promotion of health and prevention of diseases, involving people’s participation, utilizing professional management skills. It facilitates in developing a holistic view of health and medical interventions primarily focused on Community Health/Population Health. It provides us with knowledge, skills, competencies in primary, secondary & tertiary care, control and prevention of outbreaks/epidemics, community diagnosis, health needs assessment, epidemiological assessment, research and planning evidence-based health policies and programmes.
At the end of the course, the student should be able to

  1. Describe the epidemiological methods and techniques.
  2. Describe the socio demographic and environmental factors contributing to health and disease.
  3. Describe the health care delivery systems including rehabilitation of the disabled in the country.
  4. Describe the National Health Programmes with particular emphasis on maternal and child health programmes, family welfare planning and population control.
  5. Diagnose and manage common health problems and nutritional problems at the individual and community level.
  6. Plan, implement and evaluate a health education Programme / health camp for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups
  7. Use epidemiology as a scientific tool to make rational decisions relevant to community and individual patient intervention.
